CAUSES THAT REQUIRE YOUR IMMEDIATE ACTION

Yesterday we sent health insurance industry a message they will not forget.
Thousands of protesters marched through downtown Washington, D.C., to arrest the CEOs of Big Insurance, and demand that Congress finish reform right.1 In addition, we faxed over 3,000 wanted posters made by TrueMajority members like you to the insurance CEOs' offices -- tying up phone lines and creating chaos for their lobbyists.
It was big news, and Congress is taking notice. This morning leaders of the House of Representatives committed to making progress on a final bill NEXT WEEK,2 and President Obama is touring the country to build support too.3
But getting the debate restarted and putting the insurance companies on notice is only the first step. Yesterday thousands of people marched in D.C. To win, we need Congress to follow through. And that's going to take more pressure from more of us.
Check out the video of yesterday's rally and then tell 5 friends about our work so that we can build this movement and convince Congress to finish reform right.
http://act.truemajorityaction.org/p/7002/tell_friend_wvideo?tell_a_friend_KEY=336
Our work in the last few weeks has rebooted the conversation on health care reform. Thanks to your emails, calls and wanted posters, Congress is working again. And a deadline of March 18 has been floated by Obama and top congressional Democrats.
But the insurance industry is already fighting back. They've launched major new ad campaigns in the last 24 hours.4 And their allies in Congress are hard at work on plans to slow down the reform bills.5
Their plan is simple -- if they can stall reform until the end of March, Congress will go on recess and we won't have a chance to get a vote until late spring or summer.6 And the longer we wait, the harder it gets to pass reform.
We can't let them just run out the clock. But with less than a week to work and big obstacles remaining, we need to engage more friends and neighbors fast so that we can keep the pressure on Congress to finish reform right.
You're our best chance. Tell 5 friends about what we're doing on health care reform: If we can get a few more people involved in these last critical days, we can break through and finally build the health care system America deserves.

Sarah Palin is gunning for Ohio.
Not only is she making a visit to our great state on March 5 to promote Ohio Right to Life’s agenda, she’s making big donations to anti-choice candidates, like John Kasich. You remember Kasich - he had a show on Fox News and is pulling ahead of Governor Ted Strickland in recent polls.
In addition to bringing her anti-choice politics to our state, Palin recently wrote some crib notes on her hand for her Tea Party Convention speech. We can't say we blame her; we're sure she has a hard time remembering what's really important to the citizens of the United States!
So we had an idea of our own: what if we all wrote our own crib notes for Sarah to read? She needs a reminder about what's really important to our state!
What would your crib notes for Sarah Palin say? Here's your chance to hand it to Palin.
Upload a picture of YOUR crib notes. We'll post them on our page, and send everyone’s messages to her on March 5!
Your handprint will not only send a message to Sarah Palin, it will allow you to stand up and be counted as part of Ohio’s only organization dedicated solely to being the watch dogs of the right to choose in Ohio.

The Democratic leadership in Congress just announced its response to the Supreme Court's decision in Citizens United, the case that struck down limits on independent corporate campaign expenditures.
In a word: hopeless.
The package the Democrats are proposing is filled with ideas that either won't work or that, if they worked, would only invite the Supreme Court to strike again. (For a description of the proposed changes and my reactions to them, click here or scroll to the bottom of this email.)
Congress had a chance to do something real here, but rather than supporting a bold reform that would make our democracy function better, they failed; they changed nothing. And as a result, our representatives' dependency on campaign funders -- the central corrupting force acting on our government -- will continue for another day.
You know why it happened this way. Members of Congress have every incentive to preserve a system that keeps them in office by keeping their campaign coffers full. So the very same funders who've blocked progress on issue after issue for decades have now conspired to block a reform that would have made those other reforms possible.
What we need to do is show members of Congress that they're also dependent on another constituency: the voters. We're following this issue. We know the difference between fake reform and real reform. And come November, we'll make our decisions based on who had the courage to stand up to the funders, and who tried to sell America a bill of goods while protecting the status quo.
The Fair Elections Now Act is the reform we need, and we still have the chance to push Congress to pass it. So far, 135 Members of the House have signed on as co-sponsors, but we must continue to urge all of our representatives to support this crucial bill. You can use our simple tool to email your members of Congress and tell them that this issue won't fly under the radar in 2010:
http://fixcongressfirst.org/email
If the Democratic Party wants to lead, then they need to show us they're ready to lead. And if the Republican Party wants to rise back to power, they need to prove they'd use that power to enact the will of the people.
Please take action today to make real reform possible.
-- Lawrence Lessig
P.S. These are the changes the Democratic leadership proposes, and my view about each. As you read these, ask yourself: Will this change reform the fundraising Congress? Will it really make Members of Congress any less dependent on special interests?
(1) Ban foreign corporations from influencing elections.
This is a fine idea. Problem is that it is completely unclear how under the Supreme Court's reasoning this change would be constitutional. The Court said the First Amendment doesn't care who is trying to exercise the right to speak -- that the First Amendment simply limits the government's power to regulate speech. So how will it find foreigners have less freedom than corporations?
(2) Stop government contractors or TARP recipients who haven't repaid from political spending.
This selective regulation is Supreme Court bait: it wasn't imposed on TARP recipients when they took the money, and my bet is the Court views the government contractors limitation as too broad.
(3) Impose new disclosure requirements, so that the ultimate funder is exposed.
A perfectly fine regulation, but to what effect? Will the disclosure really make Members less dependent on the funders?
(4) Impose new disclaimers on TV ads.
Same point as above.
(5) Require candidates to have reasonable access to air time.
This is promising and important, though the Court has signaled increasing impatience with this sort of regulation. So again, an uncertain reform of limited effect.

Last week I posted a challenge to Rob Portman, my likely Republican opponent for the U.S. Senate this fall. Former Congressman Rob Portman (R-Ohio) is headlining an "important and only major fundraiser of 2010" for COAST (Coalition Opposed to Spending and Taxes) on March 1st in Cincinnati. All fine and good--his business--until I read a "tweet" posted by the group that included this language about the late Congressman John Murtha on the day he died: "John Murtha dead at 77. Good riddance bad egg."
The Cincinnati Enquirer reported my comments about the former Congressman Portman's open support of this group (he's raising money for them):
"There can be no excuse, no minimizing and no equivocation of this kind of disrespect that has taken our country in the wrong direction," Brunner said. "If Rob Portman fails to renounce COAST and its hateful tactics, then Ohio has a very good indication of the kind of courage he will show as a U.S. senator."
Former Congressman Portman's response? His spokesperson called the comments "inappropriate" as distracting "us from finding solutions to our economic challenges and the status quo." Then the name calling began that Jennifer Brunner "represents a rubber-stamp for the Pelosi-Reid-Obama anti-jobs agenda."
To pile on, the National Republican Senatorial Campaign Committee (NRSC) Press Secretary opened up with a torrent of comments in response to the article, with false accusations of my being "mired in questionable associations with several organizations." She said that "Ohioans will reject...partisan rhetoric and hypocrisy this November."
On this last statement, we agree.
This is the first time I have openly challenged Rob Portman to explain his actions (and now his failure to act). My opponent in the primary has been trying to land a punch on Mr. Portman for 6 months with no luck. Portman just says "jobs czar" and moves on. But as soon as we tell Mr. Portman to be decent and to show bipartisanship, the National Republican Senatorial Committee attacks with a data-dump of unrelated opposition research. Who are they afraid of?

Ohioans are decent people, and we "get" what people are about by what they do. Former Congressman Rob Portman served in the U.S. House of Representatives for 12 years with the late Congressman John Murtha (D-Pennsylvania). How can he possibly even consider headlining COAST's fund raising event now? Can the worth of any endorsement justify supporting a group spewing such hateful and disrespectful vitriol? Check out COAST's endorsement criteria: ". . . our native instincts help us separate the true patriots from the pretenders." Is this Rob Portman's mentality?
John Murtha was the first Vietnam War combat veteran elected to Congress. On the battlefield he won two Purple Hearts and a Bronze Star. A 37-year veteran who retired as a Colonel of the U.S. Marine Corps, he was a respected voice in the U.S. Congress on issues of national security. He was honored with a Profile in Courage Award by the John F. Kennedy Library Foundation in 2006 for "speaking truth to power" when he spoke out against the Iraq war and helped to shift public sentiment about the war and generate meaningful national debate about the progress, policies and objectives of the U.S. presence in Iraq.
Partisans often hold strong views, and maybe Rob Portman agrees with COAST's views. I hope not. It's incumbent on him to show Ohioans where he stands on respect and bipartisanship--important tools that will get things done for Ohio and the American people. It's the first step he can take to show us how he would conduct himself in the U.S. Senate. We need to know.
It makes me so sad for our state and our country when I hear things like what COAST has said. But it also makes me more determined than ever to wage the most aggressive and energetic grass roots campaign Ohio has ever seen. Because I know that the support of people like you and your family can trump all the big donations and endorsements from reactionary groups like COAST, whose tactics Rob Portman is afraid to renounce as he continues to support them.
Courage is important, and we need more of it in the U.S. Senate. It's how we'll change things for the American people. Let's show them how it's done. Please help me get to the U.S. Senate so I can work for you with courage, commitment and compassion. Volunteer or contribute, or tell five friends.
Thanks.

Ancient and historically important burial grounds are part of the cultural heritage of humanity. One such burial ground is the Mamilla Cemetery in Jerusalem, a holy site believed to date back to the 7th century when companions of the Prophet Mohammed were reputedly buried there. It was an active burial ground until 1948 and it has repeatedly been designated as an historical site. The Israeli government and the Simon Wiesenthal Center (SWC) are in the process of building a so-called "Center for Human Dignity-Museum of Tolerance" on the site of Mamilla Cemetery. The museum's construction has already resulted in the disinterment of hundreds of graves and the whereabouts of countless human remains are unknown. The desecration of the Mamilla Cemetery violates the human rights of the descendants of those buried there.
Israel has an obligation to respect and protect holy sites, including Mamilla cemetery, under international law, United Nations resolutions and under its own domestic law. Despite Israel's legal obligations, the Israeli Supreme Court ruled in favor of construction of the museum and the government has refused to halt the disinterment of bodies and the destruction of the ancient cemetery. Today, CCR filed a petition on behalf of the Palestinian families of those buried at Mamilla, urging several international bodies to demand that the Government of Israel:
-
Halt further construction of the "Museum of Tolerance" on the Mamilla Cemetery;
-
Document and reveal to petitioners the whereabouts of all human remains and artifacts;
-
Recover and rebury all human remains where they were originally found in coordination with the proper Muslim authorities; and
-
Declare the Mamilla Cemetery an antiquity to be preserved and protected.
For more information, please see our webpage dedicated to this issue and our new factsheet. Also, please watch Columbia professor and author Rashid Khalidi, a petitioner who has ancestors buried in the cemetery, and CCR President Michael Ratner on today's Democracy Now! program.
Thank you for your continued support in the struggle for justice.
Yours truly,

The Supreme Court's Citizens United decision has already had a remarkable impact.
Across the country, people are outraged by the prospect of our political system being subject even further to the influence of special interest money. In the streets, in our newspapers and TV talk shows, in the President's State of the Union address -- people are fed up and demanding action.
We've got a tremendous opportunity to harness this momentum, to direct this palpable sense of outrage toward a positive effort to restore public trust in our democracy.
The first step is to pass the Fair Elections Now Act. This legislation is the most important thing we can do right now to achieve this goal. Congress is considering a range of responses to Citizens United, but the Fair Elections Now Act is by far the strongest. We must do all we can to support this bill.
Today, we're launching FixCongressFirst.org, a brand new website that will serve as the online home of Change Congress and a central hub for this entire movement. On this new website you'll find updates on what's happening around the Fair Elections Now Act and ways for you to get involved to help pass this legislation.
Take a few minutes to visit our new website -- and forward this email to everyone you know to help build this movement:
http://FixCongressFirst.org
This is a special moment in the history of our democracy, a moment that calls for strong and immediate action. But it also calls for a comprehensive plan to ensure the integrity of our democracy in the long-term. Tomorrow, I'll outline the second step of this plan.
For now, though, we must remain focused on the most pressing need: passing the Fair Elections Now Act. Please visit our new website, come back often, and tell everyone you know to join you.

This past week, 3 progressive heroes in Congress stepped up to the plate and worked with grassroots groups to create huge momentum behind the public option.
Those heroes are freshmen Reps. Alan Grayson (D-FL), Jared Polis (D-CO), and Chellie Pingree (D-ME).
When progressives are bold, they deserve our thanks. Can you chip in $2 to each of their 2010 campaigns as a sign of appreciation? Click here.
Jared Polis & Chellie Pingree rallied fellow House Democrats to join them on a letter calling on Sen. Harry Reid to pass the public option through "reconciliation," which only needs a simple majority to pass the Senate.
A whopping 92 House Democrats signed this letter so far -- after getting thousands of calls from constituents. MSNBC, CBS, ABC, Huffington Post, and others reported on the momentum.
Alan Grayson was an original signer of the Polis/Pingree letter and then personally joined the PCCC, Democracy for America, and Credo Action to deliver 225,000 petition signatures to Harry Reid and other senators. This also received big media coverage. See video of the delivery here.
These freshman Democrats showed courage at a time when many top Democratic leaders are in paralysis. They are exactly the kind of bold progressives we formed the PCCC to help elect.
Can you join thousands of others and chip in $2 to each of their 2010 campaigns? Click here.
Thanks for being a bold progressive.

The $3.8 trillion budget that President Obama announced yesterday gives us a second chance to win the change in priorities we've sought for years.1
Last year, TrueMajority members proved that sensible budgets CAN be achieved when we won a huge fight to end wasteful Pentagon projects like the F-22 fighter jet.2
That victory saved billions of dollars that can now be used to build schools and restart the economy. This year we have a chance to save $2.5 billion MORE by ending the C-17, another plane we don't need.3 Tell Congress to stop building C-17s and other Pentagon toys we don't need.
http://act.truemajorityaction.org/p/7002/bluepetition?petition_KEY=151
Sign now, and we'll deliver your signature right away so your legislators read it while they're considering the new budget. And we'll start meeting with key members of Congress next week to make sure the message is understood.
This spring, we'll roll out fun new gadgets that make the budget and Pentagon spending simple to understand, and we'll ask for your help showing them off to thousands of new neighbors and friends this year on tax day. We're going to need the extra help because the weapons builders and conservatives in Congress are already digging in for a fight.4
Last year's victory on the F-22 shows what's possible. And we've already got key allies like House Speaker Nancy Pelosi examining ways to control military spending.5 So help us kick this campaign off right. Sign our petition, and then tell a few friends about the budget on Facebook or Twitter. Together we'll shift the budget and a build a better country.

Get Corporate Money Out of Politics
In President Obama's State of the Union address last night, he spoke about the grave threat our country faces from the influence of corporate money in politics.
The President spoke specifically about last week's Supreme Court decision in the case Citizens United vs. FEC, which overturned over a century of precedent and opened the floodgates for unlimited amounts of corporate money to flow into our political system. Shockingly, the court's decision may even allow foreign corporations and large multinationals to manipulate our elections.
Progress on any issue we care about depends upon our ability to stop the corporate takeover of our electoral process. If we do nothing, this ruling has the potential to undermine the very foundation of our democracy.
Click here to demand that Congressional leadership enact strong laws to save our democracy from the influence of corporate money.
Representative Alan Grayson has been one the most forceful voices in responding to this crisis. He has introduced a number of bills as part of a "Save Our Democracy" initiative to blunt some of the worst implications of the Supreme Court's decision.
These bills would include a 500% excise tax on corporate contributions to political committees, prevent for-profit corporations that receive government money from making political contributions, and apply antitrust law to industry Political Action Committees. Click here for more information.
Without these types of laws, it will be even harder for candidates and elected officials to stand up to big business. Even before the decision, we too often saw the interests of Main Street subverted in favor of the interests of Wall Street. But with the Citizens United decision now law, large corporations have the power to spend unlimited amounts of money from their general treasuries to buy elections.
To put things in perspective, the roughly $745 million Barack Obama raised to run for President (which was the most money raised by any candidate ever to run for office in the U.S.) is dwarfed by the $45 billion in profits a single company (ExxonMobil) made in 2008.
We have heard that the Democratic leadership in the House and the Senate will be deciding in the next few weeks upon a legislative package to push in response to the Citizens United decision. We need to ensure they respond boldly.
Click here to tell the leaders of Congress that you support legislation to stop the flood of corporate donations in the political process.
Thank you for working to build a better world.

A year ago, we assured you that ActBlue would keep the 50 state strategy alive, no matter what. We did. We told you that regardless of what the Democratic Party decided, we'd help you fight for Democratic goals in every state. We did. Last August we caught up with Dr. Howard Dean, the man behind the idea, to see what he thought about ActBlue's accomplishments:
I want to thank ActBlue--you have made it possible to finance the 50 state strategy by being in every single state and supporting candidates in every single state ... I appreciate it, and so does the country.
What Dr. Dean didn't mention was that we did all that because of your support. Your tips, your $15 recurring contributions--those are the backbone of our operation, and the framework that supports the new 50 state strategy. Across 2009, we didn't cash a single major Democratic check. Instead, you funded dramatic numbers like these $15 at a time:
241,000 of you used ActBlue to donate to 1,943 Democratic candidates and causes in all 50 states--mayors, city councilors, state legislators and members of Congress.
In other words, ActBlue made your voice heard everywhere, at every level. We don't need to burnish our website-of-the-people credentials. They're a part of every check we send, every staffer who knows what we do, and every elected official who holds office thanks to that money.
ActBlue isn't just about changing our country. It's about changing our politics, and we can only do that with your help. The need has never been more urgent.
Support ActBlue
From all of us at ActBlue, thanks.

During last night's State of the Union address, President Obama took the fight to Wall Street, saying "...if these firms can afford to hand out big bonuses again, they can afford a modest fee to pay back the taxpayers who rescued them in their time of need".1
Thousands of you asked the President to propose just such a tax a few weeks ago, so it's great to see the President turning more toward our point of view.
Now for the next step. Obama's proposal is a good start, but fixing our broken economy will also take more investment in jobs and a lot more regulation to protect consumers from Wall Street's recklessness.
So tell Congress to get serious about reforming our economy by expanding the President's bank tax idea, and using the money to put regular Americans back to work.
http://act.truemajorityaction.org/p/dia/action/public/?action_KEY=55
Last night the President proposed a modest tax to get back our TARP funds.2 It makes sense, and the bankers making billions in bonuses while 10% of America is out of work have no right to complain.
But beyond getting back the money we already gave to banks, we must also solve the problems that caused this crash in the first place.
So tell Congress to get serious by taxing banks and bonuses, regulating risky financial firms and investing in Main Street jobs.

The Senate starts debating health care next week. But if it passes without a public option, there's only one person to blame: Harry Reid.
As the majority leader of the Senate, the power to pass a public option is squarely in Reid's hands. Will Reid let three or four corrupt Senators owned by the insurance industry hold the public option hostage? Or will he use the reconciliation process to allow a simple majority vote on a public option?
The choice is Reid's and Reid's alone. Let's make sure he knows it.
Sign our petition to Harry Reid: Get lobbyist-owned Democrats in line, or use reconciliation to pass a public option.
During debate in the Senate this weekend, a handful of corrupt Democratic senators like Blanche Lincoln and Mary Landrieu, who have taken big donations from insurance companies, promised to vote against health care if it included a public option.[1]
If Harry Reid can't get them in line for a simple procedural vote, then he can use "reconciliation" and call for a majority vote on the public option. Otherwise, Harry Reid is using his power as Majority Leader to allow a handful of corrupt senators thwart the democratic process. We can't let that happen.
Let Harry Reid know the public option rests on his shoulders. Click here to sign our petition:
http://action.firedoglake.com/reconciliation
We know who the corrupt Democrats are working for -- the insurance companies want to kill the public option once and for all. Goldman Sachs expects insurance stocks to rise by 59% in 10 years if there is no public option, but drop by 36% if there is one. That's what happens when nobody likes your product. Their fat profits depend on being the only game in town.[2]
The American people understand that. That's why 72% support a public option, to end insurance monopolies, increase competition and control the crushing burden of health care costs for American families.[3] A majority in the Senate understands that, too -- that's why 51 have said they will vote for a bill with a public option.[4]
It comes down to a simple question: will Harry Reid allow for majority rule? Or will he let corrupt members of his own caucus block a majority of the public and Congress who want a public option?
Sign our petition to Reid: whip the corrupt ConservaDems into line, or use reconciliation to give Americans what they want and pass a public option.
Thanks for all you do.

WE NEED YOUR HELP TO FIND MINORITY PROFESSIONALS FOR NONPROFIT BOARDS!
THIS IS A CALL TO ACTION!

Although the City of Cleveland is comprised of a population that is overwhelmingly minority (primarily African-American and Hispanic/Latino), those serving on the nonprofit boards that address the most pressing needs of these minority groups are overwhelmingly white. A lack of racial diversity on these boards often makes it more difficult for trustees to understand and respond to the critical needs of the minority populations that they serve.
It is in this regard that a group of African-American and Latino professionals have come together to address this challenge by creating a Minority Board Member Pipeline Initiative. This group has worked and will continue to work with Business Volunteers Unlimited (BVU) and others in the coming months to offer programs and initiatives that connect emerging minority professionals with nonprofit board service opportunities. This effort successfully served 138 African-American and Hispanic leaders in 2008, and has resulted in 25 elections to nonprofit boards to date.
Those involved in coordinating this effort include the following: 1. April Miller Boise , Partner-in-Charge, Cleveland - Thompson Hine 2. Caprice Bragg, Vice President - The Cleveland Foundation 3. Andres Gonzalez, Director, Diversity & Community Outreach, Cleveland Clinic 4. Stephanie McHenry, President - ShoreBank 5. Randell McShepard, Vice President - RPM International Inc.
6. Eddie Taylor, President and CEO - Beverage Dispensing Solutions 7. Lorna Wisham, Vice President - The Illuminating Company
This initiative will present a third "Role of the Board" training session to introduce minority professionals interested in serving on nonprofit boards to their fiduciary and legal obligations. The session will take place on October 29, 2009, at Thompson Hine, located in the KeyCenter, 39th Floor, 127 Public Square from 8:00 a.m. to 11:30 a.m.
The session will include a legal overview of nonprofit board governance and best practices, a provocative panel discussion with experienced board members and nonprofit leaders, small group case study analysis and Q&A. BVU will also share information about board matching services and technical assistance that they provide for nonprofits, and invite up to thirty attendees to participate in their highly acclaimed board matching process, free of charge. Space and continental breakfast is sponsored by Thompson Hine. The cost of the event is $20 and seating is limited.
As minority leaders, we must remain cognizant of the fact that we all have a role to play in improving the quality of life in Northeast Ohio . Many nonprofits are on the front lines of striving to help our communities, but they need our help. Therefore, we would strongly encourage you to join with us to get the training, consultation and connections that BVU and other professionals can provide to close this gap.
This is your opportunity to deepen your commitment to Greater Cleveland. We hope to see you there! To register for the October 29th event, click here. | |
