------------------------------------------------- BLACK HISTORY MONTH FROM WKYC/TV:
"Black History Month runs from Feb. 1-29 in the U.S. and Canada.
Cleveland-based American Greetings has just introduced a new line of greeting cards that features notable black Americans. Citing growing demand for cards observing prominent black Americans, there are cards that now feature great notables such as boxing legend Muhammad Ali; singer Billie Holiday; Colin Powell and Rosa Parks. During February, the cards are displayed as a collection, but individual cards are available all year long. What is Black History month? Black History month dates back to 1926. It was first called "Negro History Week" before changing to Black History Month in 1976. The name change was brought about by Afro-Americans for the Study of Afro-American Life and History. Negro History Week was established in 1926 by Carter G. Woodson, director of what was then known as the Association for the Study of Negro Life and History. He was born to parents who were former slaves, he spent his childhood working in the Kentucky coal mines and enrolled in high school at age 20. He graduated within two years and later went on to earn a doctorate at Harvard. He was disturbed to find in his studies that history books largely ignored the black American population, and when blacks did figure into the picture, it was generally in ways that reflected the inferior social position they were assigned at the time. Woodson selected the week in February that embraced the birthdays of both Frederick Douglass and Abraham Lincoln. He conceived of the event as a national celebration, sending out a circular to groups across the United States. In addition, he sought to appeal to both whites and blacks and to improve race relations. For that reason, he chose President Lincoln's birthday as well as Douglass'. Woodson also viewed Negro History Week as an extended effort to demonstrate to the world that Africans and people of African descent had contributed to the advance of history. Although African-Americans have been in America at least as far back as colonial times, it was not until the 20th century that they gained a respectable presence in the history books. However, February has much more than Douglass and Lincoln to show for its significance in black American history. For example, just to name a few:
